Pick 47
AFL Draft
Brent Harvey is a record breaker. Whether it's breaking the AFL games record or kicking a club record of 21 goals in a game for Preston RSL decades ago.
It seems like a pretty natural road, looking back, for someone as talented as Harvey to be selected on an AFL list in the 1995 draft, but no one would have guessed a pick 47, 175cm skinny kid would play the most games in AFL history. Harvey had to battle some early criticism because of his size, even from his first Coach Denis Pagan who openly claimed, "I see you picked a jockey" to the North Melbourne recruiting department.
"I see you picked a jockey."

denis pagan Speaking to NMFC

Harvey was recruited on the back of winning the Ron James Medal for Victoria's best under 18s player, selected in the under 18s All Australian team and best on ground for the Northern Knights in their premiership win. He was then invited to the draft camp, and true to his nature, broke three records in testing.

Harvey's elite skills, athletic superiority and intuitive game sense resulted in North taking a "risk" with Harvey as pick 47 in the 1995 AFL draft.

Harvey came into the senior side in Round 3 and started his season on fire kicking a personal best of five goals against Port Adelaide in a high scoring affair.
North finished on top of the AFL ladder and played off against Adelaide in the Grand Final. A devastating loss after inaccurate kicking, 8.22 (70), was a real driver for Harvey and the rest of the side.
"Watching the Crows receive their medals and hold the cup up killed me inside but also lit a fire within all of us at the club. We wanted redemption and were going to stop at nothing to get it the following year."

The 1999 season was full of accolades for Harvey. He represented Victoria in State of Origin football and was on the winning side in North's Premiership.
North started a little slow that year winning only one of its first four games. As the year went on, Harvey and his side worked their way into form.

Harvey's consistency warranted him a late call-up into the Victorian state side to play against South Australia, in what would be the last State of Origin match until the 2008 Tribute match (which he was also apart of). The greasy conditions at the MCG no doubt suited Harvey. He was the stand out, winning the E.J. Whitten Medal for best on ground.
"It was close to the best moment of my life."

Brent harvey Speaking to GLENN McFARLANE from the herald sun about WINNING THE '96 FLAG

North again played off in the Grand Final. Many expected Essendon to take out the flag, however they failed to get over Carlton in the Preliminary Final. Harvey helped the Roos win their fourth Premiership, his 21 disposals rectifying the wrongs of the previous year.

Harvey's '03 season was filled with highlights and accolades.
North moved into 2003 without coach Denis Pagan, who went to coach Carlton. Harvey was to play under his second senior coach and former North Melbourne Premiership player, Dean Laidley.

Harvey was awarded his first Best and Fairest medal for North on the back of an outstanding 2003 season. The Syd Barker medalist went on to again be selected to represent Australia against the Irish. Harvey went on to win the Jim Stynes medal for player of the series for his pivotal role. He turned the tide for the Australians with a crutch penalty goal to put them ahead on aggregate. They went on to win the series in a tight contest.
"To be singled out among a bunch of superstars was kind of embarrassing to be honest."

North had a change of coach with Dean Laidley being replaced by Brad Scott. It was also the year that speculation around Harvey's career began to grow.
In Round 3 against St Kilda, Harvey was held to just five disposals for the game. Scrutiny soon surrounded him, with critics claiming the game had passed him by and he should retire. But, he proved the doubters wrong, racking up a career high 44 disposals, 11 marks, six goal scoring assists and one goal the next week against West Coast.
"People started writing me off and said I should retire and that the game had gone past me. I was pretty fired up the next week against the Eagles and just wanted to prove all the doubters wrong."

He also kicked what is now referred to as 'the point of the century' in the same game. Harvey streamed out of defence, took seven bounces and hit the post from about 45 metres out.

Harvey went into his 20th AFL season fresh, fit and in form.
Highlights for the season would include is performances against the Bulldogs and Port Adelaide, but his rematch with Fremantle's Ryan Crowley in Round 6 was one of the stand out efforts for the year. There had been controversy around Crowley's tactics against Harvey in the previous season. With all eyes on him, Harvey planned to "run him (Crowley) off his feet". He came out on top with 29 disposals and a 13-point victory over the Dockers.
"I’ve run out of superlatives for Brent Harvey in terms of the way he wills himself to get our team over the line,” coach Brad Scott said.

BRAD SCOTT - SPEAKING IN THE POST MATCH PRESS CONFERENCE. TAKEN FROM MARK HAYES' article in the herald sun.

It wasn't all smooth sailing however, with Harvey receiving a three week suspension for rough conduct against the Western Bulldogs’ Liam Picken towards the end of the season. Harvey was to miss North's Elimination Final but returned for the Semi-Final victory against Geelong.

There was one more AFL tribunal case for Harvey to attend before the Preliminary Final, but he was later cleared of an incident with Joel Selwood, freeing him to face Sydney in the Preliminary Final.

Harvey also represent Australia for a sixth time in the International Rules match against Ireland.

Shinboner of the Era
Breaks AFL games record
Harvey started the season by kicking three goals in seven minutes in a comeback win against the Crows.
"His numbers are the same or better than they've been during my time at North Melbourne, which is just remarkable," coach Brad Scott said.

"He's just a remarkable athlete and a really driven competitor."

He also kicked six goals against Melbourne in Round 3, breaking his own record of five.

At North Melbourne's 1996 Premiership reunion, Harvey was awarded Shinboner of the Era against the likes of Drew Petrie, Andrew Swallow, Brady Rawlings and Michael Firrito.

In Round 19, Harvey broke the VFL/AFL all-time games record of 427 against the Saints, with North having a good win against an eager opposition. Boomer had 24 disposals and was the recipient of a goal from Lindsay Thomas in what he would describe as 'a bit of a cheapy'.

Towards the end of the season, Harvey was informed, along with several club greats, that he wouldn't be offered a new contract at North Melbourne for the season 2017. The decision was made to give opportunity to younger players at the club. Heart-broken, Harvey farewelled Melbourne-based North fans in Round 22 at Etihad Stadium. The next week he played a knockout final in a loss against the Crows in his last game for North Melbourne.
